Defending You and Your Freedom in Federal CourtClifford J. Barnard, Attorney at LawThe United States Department of Justice has enormous resources at its disposal. The cold reality is that most people charged with federal felonies are convicted. Department of Justice figures for 2005 showed that 90 percent of federal defendants were convicted; the vast majority of those convicted pleaded guilty or no contest. While those figures can be daunting, they can give defendants and lawyers leverage; no prosecutor wants to be on the losing end of those statistics. My approach is to prepare each case as if it is going to go to trial. This way, I know as much as I can about the circumstances of your case, the evidence against you and mitigating factors to be considered. I form a team with you. You know your case better than anyone; I understand the law and how it applies to your case. Together we challenge the federal government in defense of your freedom and your rights. The goal is to keep you out of prison. If that goal isn't attainable, I use my knowledge of sentencing guidelines, the courts and the law to minimize the impact of a sentence on your life.
